覚え方
adapt（適合させる）+ -er（〜するもの・人）。「合わない二つのあいだに入って合わせる役」がそのまま名前になった語。
*ad-（〜へ）の「相手のほうへ寄せる」向きに、動作主の -er が付いた形。プラグ変換器も、小説を脚本に書き直す人も adapterで、モノと人の両方を指せるのがこの語尾の特徴。
AC adapter（電源アダプター）のように機器名で見ることが多い。綴り違いの adaptor もほぼ同義で、英米や分野で使い分けの傾向がある程度。
