adaptの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 adaptō（合わせる・調整する）= ad-（〜へ）+ aptō（合わせる・留める）。「対象のほうへぴったり留める」が原義。
そこから、物を別の用途に作り替える「適合させる」と、人や生き物が環境に合わせて変わる「適応する」の両方に広がった。aptō の家族が apt（ぴったりの）・aptitude（適性）で、apt を見たら「ぴったり合う」、ad- が付けば「相手に合わせにいく」。
名詞は adaptation（適応・翻案）、形容詞は adaptable（順応できる）。小説の映画化を film adaptation と言うのも「別の形式に合わせ直す」から。綴りの近い adopt（採用する）と混同しないこと。
