ラテン語 cathedra（椅子・座席）から来た語で、さかのぼれば *sed-（座る）につながる。sit・seat・session と同じ流れで、「座るもの」がそのまま名前になっている。
単なる腰かけだけでなく「座＝地位」も担う。会議の議長席から the chair（議長）、大学の講座を預かる「教授職」、動詞では chair a meeting（会議の議長を務める）。
cathedra は司教の座を指し、そこから cathedral（司教座聖堂）が生まれた。chair も cathedral も「座」だと結びつけておくと覚えやすい。
