tag はラテン語 tangō「触れる」。con（共に）と合わさった contingō は「触れて届く」で、その系統の contāgiōsus は、病気が人から人へ触れることで移る性質を指した。だから contagious は「接触でうつる・伝染性の」である。
病気だけでなく、contagious laughter（つられる笑い）・contagious enthusiasm（人にうつる熱意）のように、感情や雰囲気が周りへ広がる場面にも使う。
同じ tag を持つ contaminate（触れて汚す）・intact（触れられていない→無傷の）と並べると、「触れる」が芯だと分かる。
