中英語 countrefet が英語 counterfeit のもとで、意味は「偽の・贋造の」。形容詞・名詞・動詞のどれにも使え、counterfeit money（偽札）・counterfeit goods（模造品）・counterfeit a signature（署名を偽造する）のように働く。
