counter-（逆向きの）+ sink（沈める）。ねじの頭が表面から出ないよう、穴の口を円錐形に削って頭を沈み込ませる加工を指し、その皿穴自体の名でもある。sink は *sengʷ-（沈む・落ちる）にさかのぼる。
過去形・過去分詞は countersank / countersunk で、sink と同じ変化をする。countersunk screw は皿ねじ。
counter- の仲間には counterattack（反撃）・counterpart（対になるもの）・counterclockwise（反時計回り）がある。counter- は「逆・対」。
