excite（興奮させる・かき立てる）に、過去分詞を作る -ed が付いた形。もとが「かき立てる」なので、excited は「かき立てられた状態」、つまり自分の気持ちが高まっていること。

そのため人には excited、人を高ぶらせる物や出来事には exciting が付く。I'm excited about the trip と an exciting trip の対比がその典型。

excite の背後にある *keyh₂-（動かす）は cite（呼び出す・引用する）・incite（駆り立てる）・recite（暗唱する）とも共通している。
