覚え方
integrate（一つにまとめる）+ -ion（行為・結果を表す）。直接にはフランス語 intégration（一つにまとめること）= intégrer + -ation を受けた形で、その奥にはラテン語 integrātiō（回復・修復）がある。芯は *n̥-（〜でない）+ *teh₂g-（触れる）、すなわち「手つかずで欠けのない状態」。
欠けを補って全体にすることなので、意味は「統合・一体化」。economic integration（経済統合）、the integration of immigrants（移民の社会統合）、system integration。数学の「積分」もこの語で、微小なかけらを足し合わせて全体を求める、という同じ発想である。
対になるのは segregation（分離）や disintegration（崩壊）。「ばらばらのものを、欠けのない一つに戻す」という像が、社会・経済・数学の用法すべてを貫いている。
