ラテン語 jūnior（より若い）は、iuvenis（青年・若い）の比較形。「若い」人を基準にして、さらに若い側を表す形から、英語では「年少の」「後輩の」、さらに組織内で「下位の」という意味になった。
iuvenisの背景にある *h₂ey-（生命・永遠）は、若さを生命力の盛んな時期として捉えるイメージにつながる。junior は senior と対にして、junior は若い側・後輩側と覚えるとよい。juvenile や rejuvenate も、若さを表す同じ仲間としてまとめられる。
