食べ物や木が中から崩れ、もとの良い状態を失っていく——それが rot「腐る・腐敗」である。古英語 rotian（腐る・朽ちる）から続く語で、外から壊されるのではなく、内側から組織がぼろぼろになる感じが芯にある。
The wood is rotting. は「その木材は腐りつつある」。名詞でも使い、wood rot は木材の腐敗。
過去形・過去分詞は rotted、現在分詞は rotting と t を重ねる。rot は動作、rotten は腐った状態と組にしたい。
