suit は suite（追跡・追いかけること）と関係し、さらに <sekʷ->（ついて行く）というイメージにつながる。もともとは、何かに付いて行くこと、また互いに揃っているものを表す感覚で捉えられる。
衣服の suit は、上着やズボンなどが一緒に揃った「一式の服」。そこから、服や条件が人に「付いていく」「合っている」という意味が発展し、「似合う・適している」になった。
