alignの語源と覚え方

線に合わせて物をそろえる、が芯である。古フランス語 alignier（一列に並べる）は ad-（〜へ、綴りでは a）と lignier（一列に並べる）の組み合わせで、さかのぼるとラテン語 līnea（麻糸・線）に行き着く。麻糸をぴんと張った線に合わせて並べる、と考えると覚えやすく、そこから物を一直線に並べる「整列させる」につながる。
綴りの中に line（線）が見えるので、線に合わせることと読めば意味を取り出せる。
物の向きだけでなく、意見や方針をそろえる「同調する」にも広がる。align with ...（〜と歩調を合わせる）の形でよく使い、組織の足並みをそろえる話でも定番。名詞は alignment（整列・提携）。
