覚え方

中英語 alliaunce（同盟・婚姻の結びつき）は、ラテン語 alligō（縛りつける・結ぶ）に由来する。alligō 自体は ad-（〜へ）+ ligō（結ぶ・縛る）からなり、「〜に対して縛りつける」が原義。

「相手と結びつく」というイメージがそのまま「利害や勢力を結びつけた同盟関係」に発展し、英語 alliance は「同盟」を意味するようになった。動詞形 ally（結びつく・同盟する）に、状態を表す語尾 -ance が付いた形とも説明できる。

ligō の仲間には ally 自身のほか、rely（結びついて頼る）・oblige（義務で縛る）などがある。lig/ly を見たら「結ぶ」と読むと、alliance も「国同士を結びつけたもの」とイメージしやすい。
