覚え方
古英語 bītan（噛む） をそのまま受け継いだ語で、背後には *bʰeyd-（割る）がある。歯を立てて食い割る、が原義。
そこから「一口・噛み傷」という名詞、虫刺されの bite、魚が食いつく bite（あたり）、さらに「（寒さや風が）身を刺す」という比喩まで広がった。活用は bite - bit - bitten。
*bʰeyd- は bit（噛み切った一片→少し）・bitter（噛みつくような→苦い）・beetle（噛む虫→甲虫）と同じ。b-t の並びに「噛んで割る」が残っている、と考えるとまとめて拾える。
