詳細な語源ツリー

古英語 cruma（かけら・くず） から来た語で、パンなどが砕けてできる小さな断片を指す。今も第一義は「パンくず」である。

そこから「取るに足りないわずかなもの」の比喩に伸び、a crumb of comfort（わずかばかりの慰め）のように使う。「砕けて残った小さなかけら」という像が、物理的な意味と比喩を貫いている。

補足: つづりの b は発音しない（「クラム」）。パン粉は breadcrumbs、ウェブの階層表示 breadcrumb（パンくずリスト）もこの語である。
