ラテン語 dispellō(追い散らす)= dis-(ばらばらに)+ pellō(押しやる・追いやる)。群れを四方へ押し散らす、という具体的な動きが原義である。
英語では形のないものに使うのが普通で、霧・煙のほか、不安・疑い・噂・誤解を「払拭する」。dispel doubts(疑いを晴らす)、dispel the myth that ~(〜という俗説を打ち消す)、dispel fears(不安を取り除く)。
pellō の仲間は expel(外へ押し出す→追放する)・repel(押し返す→はねつける)・compel(押して強いる→強制する)・propel(前へ押す→推進する)。pel を見たら「押す」、前の要素で方向を読むとよい。
