dis-（ばらばらに）+ band（一団・束ねる帯） で「まとまりをほどく」。中期フランス語の desbander（解散させる・散らす） に対応する形である。
band は「束ねる帯」から「束ねられた一団」（楽団・部隊・集団）へ広がった語で、それを解くのが disband。紐で束ねてあったものをほどいて散らすという絵で、軍隊・楽団・委員会などの組織が正式に解散する／させられる場面に使う。
補足: 自動詞（The band disbanded last year.）と他動詞（disband the unit）の両方で使う。似た語では、群衆が散るのは disperse、議会や会社を解くのは dissolve。
