中英語 encompassen に遡り、中身は en-（中へ）+ compasser（測る・ぐるりと巡る）。compasser は円を描く道具の compass と同じ語で、背景の *kom-（共に）は「歩幅を合わせてぐるりと一周する」感覚につながる。en- の背景は *en-（中へ）。
「ぐるりと巡って中に収める」ことから、物理的に「取り囲む」、そして範囲として「すべてを含む・網羅する」になった。The course encompasses a wide range of topics.（その講座は幅広い話題を網羅する）が典型。
compass（円を描く）で囲って中に入れるのが encompass。include より「端から端まで丸ごと」という含みが強い。
