ラテン語 harmonia（調和・和音）から来た語。その背後は *h₂er-（組み合わせる・接合する） で、原イメージは「継ぎ目をぴたりと合わせる」職人仕事である。
板と板が寸分違わず噛み合う状態が、音の世界では同時に鳴らして濁らない「和音」となり、人の世界では意見や関係が噛み合う「調和・合意」となった。live in harmony（仲良く暮らす）、in harmony with nature（自然と調和して）のように、with で相手を示す。
同じ *h₂er- から、技として組み立てる art、組み合わせを整えた order、文の部品である article が出ている。「ぴったり組み合う」と押さえれば、音楽用語と人間関係の用法が一つに見える。
