ラテン語 rotō（回す・回転する）に由来し、そのもとに rota（車輪）がある。車輪が軸の周りを回る様子から、「回転する・回転させる」と覚える。rotate は、自分で回る動きにも、何かを回す動作にも使える。
rotate an image は「画像を回転させる」。rotate duties なら「仕事の担当を交代させる」で、順番をぐるりと回すように考えるとよい。物が回るのか、担当の順番が回るのかを見分けよう。名詞の rotation（回転・交代）にも同じ動きが残る。
