solve はラテン語 solvō（緩める・解く・解放する）に由来する。sē-（分離・除去）+ luō（義務を果たすために支払う）という要素から、「結び付きをほどく」「重荷や義務から解放する」という意味が生まれた。
絡まったものをほどくイメージが、問題を解いて解決する意味へ発展した。また、支払いによって義務を果たして束縛を解く感覚も背景にある。solve を見たら、問題をほどいて自由にすると覚えると、solution（解決策）や solvable（解決可能な）も理解しやすい。
