undercut は under-（下から）+ cut（切る）で、中英語の undercutten（下から切る）を受け継ぐ。物の下側を削り取ると、その上を支える力が弱まる。この動きを手がかりに、権威や主張の根拠を弱めるという意味を覚えられる。また価格では、相手より下の金額を提示することを表す。
undercut a rival's prices は「競争相手より安い価格で売る」。undercut an argument は「議論の説得力を弱める」で、その主張を支えていた根拠が崩れる様子を思い浮かべるとよい。価格なら相手の水準を下回り、力なら支えを下から削るという二つの形を結びつけよう。「安く売る」と「弱体化させる」を別々に暗記するより、under と cut の働きが見えてくる。
