bob（上下にひょこひょこ揺れる）+ -le（小さいものをつくる語尾）。「小さく揺れるもの」で、ニット帽の先についた毛糸の飾り玉（bobble hat）を指す。
アメリカのスポーツでは動詞で「球をお手玉する・捕り損ねる」、名詞で「ぽかミス」。首がゆらゆら揺れる人形は bobblehead。ぷるぷる揺れる小さな玉という像で、飾り玉・ぐらつき・捕球ミスをひとつにつなげられる。
