中英語 brethen（息をする）から。組み立ては breth（＝古英語 brǣþ、匂い・湯気）+ -en（動詞を作る） で、「湯気を出す」から「呼吸する」へ。
名詞 breath に e を足すと動詞 breathe。綴りも発音もセットで変わるので、「ブレス（名）／ブリーズ（動）」と口に出して覚えると良い。
