distractionの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 distractiō（引き離すこと）= distrahō（引き離す）+ -tiō（行為や結果を表す名詞を作る）。「本来向いているべき方から引き離すこと」が原義である。
注意を引き離す働きそのものと、その原因になるものの両方を指す。a distraction from work（仕事の妨げになるもの）、drive without distractions（気を散らすものなしに運転する）、Noise is a constant distraction.（騒音が絶えず集中を乱す）。
もう一つ「気晴らし」の意味があり、悩みや痛みから注意をそらしてくれる楽しみを指す。引き離す先が仕事なら妨害、苦しみなら気晴らしと考えると、正反対に見える二つの意味が一本につながる。動詞 distract、形容詞 distracted（気が散った）も同じ像である。
