フランス語 édition（版） から入った語で、背後にあるのは *deh₃-（与える）。「世に出して人々に与えること」が発想の中心で、出したもの一回分が edition である。
そのため edition は、同じ本の中身そのもの（work）ではなく、ある時点で世に出した形を指す。first edition（初版）・revised edition（改訂版）・limited edition（限定版）のように、版を重ねれば別の edition になる。新聞なら朝刊・夕刊の「版」、放送なら「〜特別編」にも使う。
*deh₃-（与える） は donate（寄付する）・dose（一回分の投与量）にも通じる。edit（外へ出す→編集する）・editor・editionをひとまとまりにし、「世に出す」筋で覚えるとよい。
