ラテン語 ēditor（出版のために内容を準備する人）= ēdō（産出する・放出する）+ -tor（動作主を表す接尾辞）。内容を世に出す人、という原義から、出版物のために文章を整える「編集者」になった。

-tor は「〜する人」を表す部品なので、editor は「内容を外へ出す人」と覚えるとよい。edit（編集する）や edition（刊行物）も、内容を世に出すイメージで editor と結びつけられる。
