impedanceの語源と覚え方
覚え方
英語 impede（妨げる）+ -ance（状態や働きを表す名詞をつくる）。impede の中身は「中へ」の *en- と「踏む・歩む」の *ped- で、足に何かを絡ませて進めなくするイメージ。
そこから電気工学で「交流の流れを妨げる働き＝インピーダンス」という専門語になった。音響や機械でも「流れに対する抵抗」を指す。
同じ *ped- の仲間は pedal（足で踏む）・pedestrian（歩行者）・expedite（足かせを外す→促進する）。ped は「足」で、im- なら足止め、ex- なら足を自由にすると対で覚える。
