フランス語 indexation から入った語で、中心にあるのは index。その先には「指し示す」を意味する *deyḱ- があり、index はもともと「指し示すもの」。
同じ *deyḱ- の系統に indicate（指し示す）・dictate（言いつける）・judge（法を示す人）がある。
英語の indexation は、賃金や年金を物価指数に連動させること、またデータに索引を付けることを指す。
