thumb（親指）は古英語 þūma（親指）に由来する。親指はほかの指より太く盛り上がっているため、膨らんだ・盛り上がった部分を表すイメージと結びつき、親指の名称になった。
*tewh₂-（腫れる・強くする）と *tum-（膨らむ・盛り上がる）を手がかりに、太く盛り上がった指＝thumbと覚える。thumbs-up は「親指を立てる合図」、thumbnail は「親指の爪」から転じて、画面に表示する小さな画像を指す。
