覚え方
古英語 boterflye（蝶）は、butere / buter（バター）+ flēoge / flye（羽ばたいて飛ぶ小型昆虫）という組み合わせ。バターや乳脂肪と蝶を結びつけた呼び名が定着したものと考えられ、「バターのようなもの」と「飛ぶ虫」が一語になった。
butere / buter の語源とされる *tewh₂-（腫れる・強くする）は、乳脂肪が膨らみ固まるイメージにつながる。一方、flēoge / flye の *plewk-（飛ぶ・流れる）は fly（飛ぶ）や flight（飛行）を連想する系列。同じ butter + fly の形は、蝶泳ぎや外科用テープの名称にも広がっている。
butter は乳脂肪、fly は飛ぶものと分けて、「バターのようなものが飛ぶ」と覚えるとよい。
