覚え方
ラテン語 ēlūdō（かわす・逃れる）= ex-（外へ）+ lūdō（遊ぶ）。剣闘や競技で相手の攻撃をひらりとかわす、という身のこなしが原義。
だから elude は力ずくで逃げるのではなく、巧みにすり抜ける。The suspect eluded the police for years（容疑者は何年も追跡をかわし続けた）。人以外にも使い、The word eludes me（その語がどうしても出てこない）・Success eluded him（成功は彼の手をすり抜けた）と、つかもうとする側から逃げる言い方が英語らしい。
形容詞は elusive（とらえどころのない）。lūdō（遊ぶ）の仲間には illusion（心を弄ぶもの→幻想）・allude（それとなく触れる）・ludicrous（お遊びのような→ばかげた）があり、lud/lus を見たら「遊ぶ・じゃれる」。
