覚え方
ラテン語 neglegēntia（不注意・怠慢）から。neglegō（なおざりにする）+ -ia（抽象名詞を作る） で、「なおざりにしていること」がそのまま状態を表す名詞になった。
日常語の「怠慢」に加え、法律では「過失」を指す専門語でもある。gross negligence（重過失）、professional negligence（業務上の過失）のように、「払うべき注意を払わなかった」という責任の話で頻出する。
neglegō は nec（〜ない）に語を足した形で、後半は legō（選ぶ）とする説と、「気にかける」を意味する同形の語とする説がある。diligence（勤勉）も後半は同じとされ、ちょうど裏表の関係にある。nec が付いた瞬間に「選ばない・気にかけない」へ反転すると覚えるとよい。
