ラテン語 neglegēntia（不注意・怠慢）から。neglegō（なおざりにする）+ -ia（抽象名詞を作る） で、「拾い上げないでいること」がそのまま状態を表す名詞になった。
日常語の「怠慢」に加え、法律では「過失」を指す専門語でもある。gross negligence（重過失）、professional negligence（業務上の過失）のように、「払うべき注意を払わなかった」という責任の話で頻出する。
*h₂leg-（気にかける）の系統で、diligence（よく選び取る→勤勉）とはちょうど裏表。neg- が付いた瞬間に「気にかけない」へ反転すると覚えるとよい。
