substandardの語源と覚え方

sub-（下の・下位の）+ standard（標準） で「基準以下の」。substandard housing（水準に満たない住宅）のように、最低限のところに届いていないことを指す。
英語の standard はもともと戦場に立てる軍旗を指し、旗が基準点になったところから「標準」の意味が育った。組み立ては stand（立つ） を含む形。
stand は *steh₂-（立つ）に連なり、stable・status と同じ系統。sub- は subpar（標準以下の）、subzero（氷点下の）のように「下回る」ことを表す部品としてよく働く。
