古英語 dūst（塵・粉） をそのまま受け継いだ語で、細かく砕けて空中に舞うものを指す。
背景には *dʰwes-（息をする・煙を出す） があり、息や煙のように、ふわりと立ちのぼって漂うものが原義の像。だから dust は積もった「ほこり」であると同時に、動詞では「ほこりを払う」にも「粉をふりかける」にもなる。
