fenceの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 dēfēnsa（防御・守り）= dēfendō（追い払う・守る）+ -tus（過去分詞を作る） に遡る語で、defence の頭が削れて fence になった。もとの意味は防ぎ守るものである。
dēfendō の背後には *gʷʰen-（打つ・殺す） があり、「打って追い払う」が芯にある。守るために敷地を囲うもの、という用法が定着して、今の名詞「柵・塀」と動詞「囲う」になった。
守りの意味も別の形で生きていて、剣術の fencing（フェンシング＝身を守る技）は同じ語である。慣用句の sit on the fence（塀の上に座る→どちらにもつかない）も押さえておくとよい。
