freedomの語源と覚え方
覚え方
free（自由な）+ -dom（状態や領域を表す名詞を作る）。中英語 fredom、古英語 frēodōm（自由）= frēo（自由な）+ -dōm をそのまま受け継いだ、生粋の英語らしい組み立ての語である。
-dōm の奥は *dʰeh₁-（置く・なす） で、もとは「定められた状態・領分」。kingdom（王の領分）・wisdom（賢い状態）と並べると、-dom は「〜という状態・世界」だと見えてくる。free 側は *preyH-（喜ばせる・愛する）。
用法は freedom of speech（言論の自由）と freedom from fear（恐怖からの自由）が代表で、of は「〜する自由」、from は「〜がない自由」と読み分ける。liberty がやや制度寄りなのに対し、freedom は束縛のない状態そのものを広く指す。
