belayの語源と覚え方

古英語 beleċġan（覆いかぶせる・周りに置く）= be-（周りに・すっかり）+ leċġan（置く）。leċġan は現代の lay（置く・横たえる）で、語根は *legʰ-（横たわる）。
「ぐるりと回して留め置く」ところから、船ではロープを杭に巻きつけて固定すること、登山では墜落を止める確保（ビレイ）を指すようになった。命令形の Belay that! は「その話はやめろ」という海事の言い回し。
