reincarnation は reincarnate（生まれ変わる）+ -ion（行為・結果を表す名詞を作る）で、「肉体に再び宿ること」＝生まれ変わり・転生。
reincarnate の中の carn は「肉・肉体」を表す部分で、carnivore（肉食動物）と共通している。魂がもう一度「肉」をまとう、という絵がそのまま語形になっている。
頭の re- はイタリック祖語 *wre-（後ろへ・再び）にさかのぼる。比喩的に「〜の生まれ変わり（生き写し）」の意味でも使う。re-＋carn＝もう一度、肉体へと覚えるとよい。
