delightの語源と覚え方
覚え方
light の部分はラテン語 laciō（誘い込む・おびき寄せる）の系統で、そこから出た dēlectō は「心を引きつけて喜ばせる・魅了する」。心が引き寄せられて浮き立つのがこの語の芯にある。
名詞なら「大きな喜び・歓喜」、動詞なら「大いに喜ばせる」。take delight in ~（〜を楽しむ）、to my delight（うれしいことに）。単なる満足より、心が弾む感じが強い。
綴りに gh が入るのは light（光）に引かれて後から変わったためで、意味の上で「光」とは関係がない。delicious（おいしい）・delicate も同じ laciō の一族である。
