distrust（不信）+ -ful（〜に満ちた） で、「疑いに満ちた・人を信用しない」。distrust 自体が dis-（〜でない）+ trust（信頼） なので、信頼の欠如で満たされているという二重の作りになっている。
be distrustful of strangers（見知らぬ人を警戒する）、a distrustful glance（疑わしげな一瞥）。漠然とした不安ではなく、具体的な理由があって信用しない場合に使うことが多い。
-ful の背後は *pleh₁-（満たす） で、full と同じ「いっぱいにする」。-ful が満たすものが信頼ではなく不信であると押さえると、suspicious（疑い深い）との近さも見えてくる。
