覚え方
count はラテン語 computō（合わせて数える）で、古フランス語では conter「数え上げる・語る」。そこへ re（もう一度）が付いた reconter は、出来事を順に並べて語り直すこと。
数えるように一つずつ並べるのが核なので、感想を述べるのではなく、起きた順に細かく伝える語。recount one's experiences（経験を詳しく語る）のように使う。
数と語りが同じ語で結ばれるのは珍しくなく、tell にも「数える」の意味が残る（teller は出納係）。

re は「もう一度」、count は「数える」。合わせて、いちど出した集計をやり直し、一つずつ確認しながら数え直すこと。
最初の数え上げを疑うときの語なので、選挙の票が僅差のときや、在庫と帳簿がずれたときに出てくる。demand a recount（再集計を要求する）のように名詞でも使う。
同じつづりの recount には「詳しく語る」という別語があるが、こちらは数える方。re- と count に分けて読めば取り違えない。
