覚え方
de(離れて)+pute(勘定する・刈り込む)で、自分の務めを切り分けて人の手に渡すこと。そこから「権限を委ねる・任命する」になった。
今の英語では delegate のほうが普通で、depute はスコットランド法や公的な文書に残る硬い語。日常で目に入るのは名詞の deputy(代理人)のほうである。
動詞 deputize(代理に任命する・代役を務める)、名詞 deputation(代表団)も同じ仲間として一緒に押さえておくとよい。
