disparityの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 disparitās（相違・不均等）= dispār（等しくない）+ -tās（状態を表す名詞を作る、英語の -ty）。「等しくない状態」がそのまま語の中身になっている。
単なる difference（違い）ではなく、そろっているべきものの釣り合いが崩れている、という含みが強い。the disparity between rich and poor（貧富の格差）、gender disparity（男女差）、wage disparity（賃金格差）のように、是正されるべき不均衡を指すのが普通である。
頭の dis-（〜でない） と、-ty で終わる抽象名詞という形をまとめて押さえる。形容詞 disparate（かけ離れた・異質な）も同じ流れで、「そろっていない」が共通の芯になる。
