覚え方
ラテン語 distīnctiō（区別・句読点）は、distinguō（分けて区別する）+ -tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞語尾）。物事を押し分けて境目をはっきりさせることから、「区別」や、他と違って目立つ「顕著さ」を表すようになった。
その背景にある *stengʷ- は「押す」。何かを押して分け、境界を明確にするイメージが distinction の中心にある。distinction は「押し分けて違いを見えるようにすること」と覚えると、distinct（明確に異なる）や distinguish（区別する）にもつながる。
