覚え方
ラテン語 distinguō（分けて区別する）= dis-（ばらばらに）+ stinguō。stinguō は語根 *stengʷ-（突き刺す・押す）につながり、原義は「印を突き入れて切り分ける」。
目印を入れて分ける →「区別する・識別する」、さらに「際立たせる」。distinguish A from B（AをBと区別する）、distinguish oneself（頭角を現す）。形容詞 distinguished は「際立った」＝著名な。
同じ系統に distinct（はっきり分かれた）・distinction（区別・栄誉）・extinguish（突いて消す→消火する）がある。stingu は「突く」を核にすると綴りも思い出しやすい。
