layer は、lay（横たえる・置く）+ -er（行為者または対象を表す名詞語尾）から、「置かれたもの・敷かれたもの」を表す。古英語の leyer（置く人・敷設者）という形を経て、物を横に置いて重ねた「層」、または表面に塗って重ねる「積層」へ意味が広がった。
