覚え方
ラテン語 trānsgredior = trāns-（横切って・向こう側へ）+ gradior（歩く・進む）、つまり「線を越えて歩く」。
英語では法や道徳の一線を越えることを指し、transgress the law（法を犯す）、transgress social norms（社会規範を踏み越える）のように使う。物理的に越える意味もあるが、今は倫理の話が中心。
gradior は *gʰredʰ-（歩く）に連なり、grade（歩みの段階）、gradual（少しずつ進む）、progress（前へ進む）、degree と同じ系統。grad/gress は「歩む」。
