古フランス語 desvestir（服を脱がせる）= des-（＝ラテン語 dis-、離して・逆にする）+ vestir（＝ラテン語 vestiō、着せる・覆う）。文字どおり「着せたものを剥ぎ取る」が原義である。
そこから衣服にとどまらず、地位・権利・幻想を「剥奪する」へ広がり、現代のビジネスでは資産や事業を「手放す・売却する」を指す。*wes-（着せる） の系列は vest（ベスト／権利を与える）・invest（着せかける→投資する）で、invest の反対が divest と並べると一気に片づく。
補足: divest A of B（AからBを奪う）の形。名詞は divestment・divestiture（事業売却）。
