disappearanceの語源と覚え方
覚え方
disappear（姿を消す）+ -ance（状態・行為を表す名詞を作る） で「消えること」。動詞の意味をそのまま名詞にした形である。
出来事としての「失踪・行方不明」（the disappearance of a witness）と、状態としての「消失」（the gradual disappearance of the species）の両方に使う。現れていたものが見えなくなるという前提があるので、はじめから存在しないものには使わない。
補足: 「〜の失踪」は of で受ける。事件の報道では vanish（ふっつり消える）や go missing（行方不明になる）と並んで使われる。
